I think it's more about NBC's position re: scripted daytime shows than about actual numbers. Of course, low ratings would give them a very clearly visible reason to cancel the show, though.
You are right, but according to the "Wikileak" emails...... A top NBC exec (forgot his name....sorry....) was already considering cancelling Days in favor of a more efficient and cost friendly talk show. That was during the last renewal, and I cannot remember where the numbers were last time, but I am pretty damn sure they were much better than this (I think it was during Kristen's original return and reign of terror, and that was by far TomSell's best story and highest rated months). Right now, we are far below that threshold, so something has gotta give. I think if the new team and cast changes can shake things up and get the 18-49 ratings competitive with GH, and the 18-34 ratings rising to where they make an impact on other shows, it will start looking less ominous. If they can get their daily viewership average back up above 2.5 million CONSISTENTLY, and the ratings up to about a 2.0 average, Days will survive. A 1.9 rating is borderline at best and no guarantee of anything now that Days has reached it's big milestone. I dare say, and predict, a 1.8 or below at the time of renewal would likely result in cancellation, unless the demos are unnaturally high. We'll see, and Days has comeback from the brink before. I have been positive through the years, and I don't want to be all doom and gloom like an old testament prophet, but with the leaked emails, the 50th achieved, and the very low numbers, Days is likely in more trouble than any other time in it's history. It can pull out, but with a summer full of TomSell, Is it likely? On The Positive: If ANYTHING can pull out this show, the hype and returns over the 50th could do it. Days will get some publicity over the big anniversary, and if it's good, it could turn around. This is Days after all, it doesn't die easily, or it would already be gone. This show is like a member of my family and I want to see it turn around. I pray it does.
Ted Harbert is that exec :) . The leaked emails kinda showed (if TH's position wasn't used as a "push" which is also possible) that even with relatively high ratings "Days" was/is at risk. If the network prefers cost friendly (=cheaper) talk/info shows, not much can be done (TomSell's summer or not TomSell's summer), IMO. Of course, it's great that the show seems to be trying everything they can for their 50th, so let's see and hope for the best :D . About that Ted exec, I've recently found out that even though he is an exec at NBC Daytime, he DOES NOT make the final decision.

About that Ted exec, I've recently found out that even though he is an exec at NBC Daytime, he DOES NOT make the final decision. Ted Harbert isn't an exec at NBC Daytime, he's Chairman of NBC Broadcasting.
Bruce Evans is Senior Vice President, Current Series, https://www.nbcumv.com/executive/bruce-evans/bios_read_more?division=1 (or SVP- Current Programming, https://www.linkedin.com/pub/bruce-evans/6/774/95), not sure which one is newer.
Btw, according to wikki "NBC no longer has a daytime programming block". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_Daytime
Harbert may be not the only person who decides whether to renew the show or not but it's possible that his position is important enough in the process.

He wasn't important enough to get his way last time, but the show may not be so lucky next time. No use worrying about it. It'll happen or it won't. Hopefully they don't go so low this summer that it can't be repaired.

Btw, George Cheeks (mentioned in Sony's emails about Harbert's position)
Spoiler: click to toggle On Dec 23, 2013, at 11:39 PM, "Frost, Jeffrey"
<Jeffrey_Frost@spe.sony.com> wrote: I finally heard back from Cheeks this evening. The big obstacle has been Ted Harbert who really wants to move to low cost info/talk shows instead of DOOL after next season. Despite this (and Harbert’s objection), NBC will agree to two more years of DOOL at $775K next season and $750K the following season, provided we go up from our current proposal of $4.25m to settle the Community issue to $4.50m. How do you feel about $4.50m? Given Harbert’s strong push for alternative programming after the next season, I think we’re better off locking in 2 years of DOOL now and paying the additional $250K. was promoted in 2014: http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/nbc-promotes-business-affairs-chief-george-cheeks-to-oversee-latenight-1201355813/
He must have been very successful at doing his job as business affairs chief ;) ;) ;)
